Very helpful. I only wish that I knew then (when I signed up) what I know now. Now I can choose a new school for my kids with confidence.

I'm really sorry about your experience with bullying. I too saw teachers bully. I understand about not being to talk to your parents about something. I couldn't talk to my parents about anything. I'm glad you are successful in the city. I do, however, stand by my stance on self defense. It works. No, it doesn't make one a superman and defeat a mob, but I can make this promise.. You can sure make them remember you! You hurt them bad enough and win or lose, they most likely will move on the next time. That's real life, not a dreamed up scenario.

Nice post. I grew up in small town Texas. Tom Bean, population 800 and something. I was on the receiving end of the bullying. We never had a zero tolerance policy during the 80s and 90s. I gratuated in 97. Hell, some of the teachers were bullies themselves. I kind of have a problem with your "self-defense" theory. It's really hard to defend one's self against a whole pack of rabid small-town jocks who are made to believe that they rule the world. I've moved on and am reasonably successful in the big city. (It's kind of funny that the same guys who made my life a living hell are now the town "straw dogs" and failures in their own right.) I just found out the other day that my nephew is being coached in peewee football by one of the guys who bullied me. Great news! My nephew is being mentored by a bigot! My sister's answer to that: it's not her or my nephew's problem and i should just stay out of it because it effects the way he is treated. Funny how things come full circle. Anyway, I suppose that is neither here nor there. You do have one thing right. It should start in the home with parents instilling confidence in their children. I don't think you are taking into consideration the children who are terrified to let their parents know that they are being bullied for fear of not living up to their parents expectations or fear of being bullied by their own parents. Unfortunately, those cases sometimes end up with a child dangling from the end of a rope.

Jodi, Agreed! There are cures and treatments all around us. Maybe with this making the news more people will be willing to try different treatments and live a healthier, happier life.

I was just reading about this today. Fascinating, isn't it?

There's a three page spread on this study on the August 15th edition of US News--in the health section. Just goes to show that many of the cures and treatments we need are all around us.

I like her music as well, though I admit I haven't heard any of her newer work. Is it as good as the older stuff?
