Fun

With news media consistently spewing out stories that are gloomy and downright depressing, I thought I’d write about some good things. Things that are fun. The stuff that matters in life, like being able to smile, laughing and enjoying time with friends and loved ones. This is what matters, at least in my opinion, not watching the news and letting it drain every last bit of good humor you have in you.

Scooters

My scooter

Scooters are fun!

Scooters may not be “cool” like motorcycles… but they sure are fun! There’s just something about them that I can’t describe other than just pure fun. Maybe it’s the way they look. Maybe it’s how they sound. Or maybe it’s something to do with scooting down a road at 30 or 40 mph on two 10 inch wheels propelled by a little 50cc motor. Whatever it is, I love it!

Four-wheeling at Night

We are ready to go

If you have one or more four-wheelers with headlights, riding at night is a whole different experience. (Just be safe about it, even with headlights you can’t see danger as fast or well as you can during daylight hours.) It’s a different feeling and somewhat of a challenge. Part of the challenge is making sure you keep yourself at safe speeds. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the moment and find yourself going too fast for night riding. Crashing would, without doubt, put an abrupt end to the fun of it. But being out there and seeing all the night critters is a lot of fun. Gotta watch out for skunks though, I came within inches of running smack into one and was able to accelerate and avoid it just as it sprayed. I got lucky, the dog didn’t. She stunk for days.

Taking Random Photos

Here in Texas, each town sucks as bad as the last one so it doesn't matter which way you turn. :-)

Shooting random photos is fun. I don’t know why, but it is. I usually end up deleting most, if not all, of them but every now and then I get some that I like and keep. Now when I ride for fun, 4 wheels or 2, I take a camera with me. You never know what you’ll see.

Spending Time With Family

The best things in life aren’t things at all. Spending time with friends/loved ones is priceless whether it’s taking a hike, riding, road trip, playing games or watching a good movie together. There’s nothing like it and you make memories that last a lifetime.

So if the news is getting you down, try turning off the TV or radio and spend that time doing something that will make you smile and laugh instead. I guarantee it’s worth it and you’ll feel a lot better for it. Works every time for me. Here’s to having a little fun!

Change

Sometimes, one simply finds themselves at a point where one just knows it’s time for a major change. Many things can trigger this. Realizing that what you have been doing up to this point is leading nowhere, or the realization that one simply can no longer tolerate the situation one is in or even finding out some information that you had no idea about can all bring about this state. That is where I find myself now. Realizing that things have to change. I have to change and adapt to a new situation. It’s certainly not a comfortable feeling, what with all the uncertainties and variables. Nevertheless, there is also a sense of excitement in the hope that what it all turns out like will be far better than what it was.

I have known many people who have had their lives completely changed by unexpected circumstances, others by finding out something they didn’t know but needed to, and still others by the seemingly sudden realization that things just couldn’t go on status quo. Most of them, the majority in fact, did quite well after the unsettling period of change and adjustment. Almost all of them say they are much happier with their lives now than before. I can only hope that will be the case with me. I’ve had a feeling change was coming for quite some time now, but now there is no questioning it. It’s already happening.

Nothing stays the same. Change can be difficult to say the least. But trying to hold on to something that simply isn’t there or isn’t working any longer can (and usually does) prove to be even more difficult and painful than making the necessary changes and learning to adjust to the new situation. I had always thought I was pretty good at accepting change, now I will find out how good I am at re-evaluating and adjusting to a change that must happen as quickly as possible. So quickly in fact that I’m uncertain of how I am going to deal with some of the issues because of the rapidity with which it must all occur.

I keep reminding myself that one cannot control much of what happens to them, but one can control how they react to it. My reactions with need to be careful and not hasty so that when all the dust clears I too can say that I am much happier with my life than I was before the change.

I realize this hasn’t been a very informative post, but this is me just trying to put my thoughts together in some semblance of coherency so that I can look back when it’s all done and see how I was dealing with it. My dad told me my grandfather used to say that, “The winds of change are always blowing”… I guess that’s pretty true, as right now they are gusting pretty strongly.

Police State

Police state. Martial law. The new Inquisitions. Whatever you want to call it, it’s happening. Right before our eyes. When do we, as a supposedly free people, say “enough is enough”? There have be SO many events recently that I have had a difficult time deciding on which to blog about. After learning about what is happening to Muslim communities I decided to write about that and mention some of the other extremely disturbing events that are taking place.

Muslim communities, particularly in New York, are being overtly and covertly spied on in ways that defy logic or understanding. Yes, overtly spied on sounds like an oxymoron, but it’s not, as you will see. The covert part is clear enough, under cover agents being placed in Muslim communities and mosques, secretly listening in on sermons and that sort of thing. The overt is the NYPD and, evidently, the FBI as well, knocking on doors in Muslim communities and asking residents questions about their mosque attendance, what websites they use to access news, their political ideology, their views about recent (and current) events in the Middle East and so on. This is all done to people who are not accused of any crime. Their only “crime” is that the FBI and the NYPD doesn’t like Muslims. They apparently especially don’t like Muslims interacting with one another and living their faith.

What would you do if the FBI or your local law enforcement came knocking on your door asking you questions like that? “Where do you worship? What is being said there? What websites do you use to get your news? What are your political views? What do you think about events in the Middle East?” What would you do? If it happened to me, I hope I would be able to refrain from my initial, knee-jerk reaction of clearly saying, “F*** you!” and instead calmly ask if I was under arrest and if not then not answer a single question and shut the door in their face. If I was placed under arrest, I would still not answer any questions and not say anything at all except to demand a lawyer.

The Occupy Movement

Then there are the events surrounding the Occupy movement. Unarmed citizens being gassed, pepper sprayed, shot with ‘bean-bags’ and rubber bullets, clubbed, punched, kicked and otherwise brutally treated. President Obama, our fearless leader {sarcasm} has recently said that the DOJ will be investigating abuses by police. I find this very odd indeed since that would mean that one department of the government will be investigating what yet another department, the DHS (Homeland Security), has had an active role in coordinating. It’s like the old saying about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

Why are the members of the Occupy movement being so brutally treated when the T-baggers, er, the Tea Party rallies and protests are not? Is it because the Tea Party has members at their rallies and protests that look like someone from The Beverly Hillbillies walking around with semi-automatic weapons slung over their shoulders? It’s absurd! Nobody from the Occupy movement is walking around with guns slung over their shoulders and yet they are greeted by armed and armored denizens of the new police state. I think it’s clear. The Tea Party simply cannot gather the numbers and momentum that the Occupy movement has. This obviously frightens the government and irritates the Tea Party.

SOPA

If SOPA passes, then websites ranging from giants generating billions of dollars to small blogs like this one could be shut down, fined or face other legal action if they (whoever they decide to oversee SOPA) deem a site to be in violation of the new law. The Internet-Nazis supporting and pushing SOPA claim it’s simply to help stop piracy. Don’t believe that load of crap. Research SOPA and you will see it for what it is… censorship. Censorship already happens, it’s nothing new, but this act will take it to a whole new level. It will give government and corporations sweeping powers to crush any content on the Web they don’t like, or any site on the Web they don’t like. Like all the absurdities and lawlessness taking place in the name of “national security”, it will be taken to the Internet in the name of SOPA.

Welcome, my friends, to the new police state. Where, especially among the GOP and Tea Party, Christianity is the only acceptable religion and all others may lead to terrorism (their thoughts, not mine!), where censorship may soon reign supreme, where unarmed American citizens are brutalized in our streets by the very people sworn to “serve and protect” them. Where paranoia is praised. I think it’s safe to change the spelling of our country’s name now. Instead of America, it would seem that Amerika is more appropriate.

Solidarity

I had the pleasure of having a very civil and enjoyable discussion with several people on Twitter last night. The topic began with reading an article on a group called the Oath Keepers and went from there to how people can become stereotyped (the mainstream media is mostly to blame for this) by what constitutional rights they speak up most vigorously for. For example many, if not all, people who support the 2nd amendment are seen as right wing crackpots and those who are a part of or support the Occupy movement are viewed by the genuinely uninformed and also the real crackpots as “aimless hippies”. I support both the right to own guns and the right to freedom of speech and peaceable assembly. Both the 1st and 2nd amendments. But it doesn’t end there. I support all our rights and liberties. I am neither a right ring crackpot or an aimless hippie. I am far left leaning, and I strongly support the Occupy movement and am infuriated by the brutality they are facing at the hands of police. I am also strongly opposed to any political group or agenda to try to infringe upon the 2nd amendment.

People, especially at the prompting of news outlets such as FOX, can tend to all too easily compartmentalize others and it always becomes and us-vs-them sort of thing. Organizations such as FOX depend on this sort of thing to stay in business. If you are a FOX fan and think you are getting the whole story, you are sadly mistaken. The U.S. Government has also “cashed in” by promoting fear. The Patriot Act is the most viscous and absurd attack on our rights and yet it was passed without even so much as an outcry. Keep the people in fear and they will allow anything, at least most of them. The government knows this and uses it quite frequently. FOX certainly won’t explain to you the extent of spying on American citizens (yes, including you) taking place now.

To paraphrase one of the people I was interacting with on Twitter, “It’s our commonality and not our differences we should embrace. Solidarity does not require 100% agreement”. So very true! I stand in solidarity with those exercising their 1st amendment and also with those who stand for the 2nd. It’s the complete and utter apathy I see from the 2nd amendment supporters toward the Occupy movement that utterly disgusts me. As I’ve said before, if and when there is an assault on the 2nd amendment you who support it will certainly not want apathy toward your cause. It is hypocrisy to claim that you support the constitution (even if the 2nd amendment is about the extent of your knowledge of it) and then show nothing but apathy toward those being brutalized for exercising their rights. If you disagree with that statement then please enlighten me as to how it is not hypocritical.

I support ALL our rights and it was a real pleasure to find that, through civil discussion, when it comes down to it, we all did. There was not 100% agreement on everything, but as previously stated 100% agreement is not a necessity for solidarity. We should all be disturbed and stand against an infringement on ANY of our rights. Anything less is simply picking a favorite right and only fighting for that one (hypocrisy) or worse yet, actually turning against your fellow human fighting for their rights (apathy). We can put aside our differences to make a strong show of solidarity for all our rights. This was proven to me very clearly last night. Thanks to all who participated!

P.S., I know I haven’t updated the TrackME page but I’ve been too busy, but I will update it as soon as possible.

More Activity

TrackME page updated to cover activities of November 1st, 2011. This will go on every day so I won’t be posting again simply to announce an update to that page. Regular posts will still come. That page will be updated daily though. I am, however, going to have to find another way to do it. Something more efficient, otherwise the page will start to have a never-ending scroll bar.

The Illusion of Privacy

I’ve decided to create this (the “TrackME” page at the top) page to aid all those interested in tracking American citizens. You know, groups like the F.B.I., C.I.A., Department of Homeland Defense, the Justice Department and the National Reconnaissance Office. People who like to snoop around and know what Americans are doing every minute of every day. I got the idea from another person who is doing the same thing after a ridiculous encounter with the F.B.I. The person, like the vast overwhelming majority of the people they “secretly” watch, had done absolutely nothing wrong. Yet they kept tracking him. He noticed that they were watching his Internet activity, months after the initial encounter, which you can see they are doing to you too with any one of a number of real-time network traffic analyzing tools freely available. Just install one of these tools and start monitoring and you will see that you too are being watched.

The being watched via Internet is no news to me. I first started noticing it as far back as 2004. Since so many people really don’t care much about what is going on behind the scenes as long as they are able to surf the Web smoothly, they have no idea that they are being monitored. But I have long worked in the security side of IT so I guess I’m somewhat “paranoid” about what goes on with my network. I monitor it ALL the time. When I’m not monitoring it, I have tools that do it for me. So, yeah, I noticed when I started seeing hits from varying government agencies. I have nothing to hide. That’s not the problem. It’s the principle of the thing. I don’t like being spied on.

These days, privacy is really an illusion unless you never use the Internet at all and don’t have a smartphone, aren’t registered to vote, don’t own a vehicle or have a driver’s license, own or rent a place to live and so on. If you have a listed (or even unlisted, actually) telephone line, even if it’s only used for DSL service, you can easily be found.

To further make my point of privacy being an illusion, take all the people using social networks (including myself) like Twitter of Facebook and so on. As for security/privacy, Facebook is probably the worst and not just because of the way the site works but because of the sheer volume of personal information people place there. Half your login credentials are right there for anyone to see unless you jump through the hoops to limit who can see your “page” (even then it’s not foolproof). It also displays your phone number if you use an “app” on your phone to access the service. This is bad enough, but the worst actually comes from what the users themselves willingly share. People actually post when they are going on a vacation, game, family gathering and so on. That’s like putting a huge neon sign on your house reading, “Rob me. Nobody home.” In all my time helping clients with security issues, I can honestly say that I continue to be amazed at how much information people willingly give and how poorly (if at all) they protect what they don’t want to share. I’ve actually had many, many people say to me that it’s “too much trouble” to encrypt sensitive files and then have to remember a decent password/key to access the files.

Anyway, I’ve decided to start tracking myself. I’ll post everything no matter how trivial. I have a smartphone and that’s what I’ll be using to take the pictures. In all the government’s infinite wisdom and with all their high-tech spying goodies, surely there is somewhere among them a person who knows how to examine the EXIF data on the pics to know that they are indeed what I say they are and what I used to take them and even down to the second of when I took them. I, like the person I got this idea from, believe that by doing this it devalues my information greatly. After all, if I’m putting it all out there myself it sort of takes all the fun out of spying on me doesn’t it? So, if the aforementioned agencies need more info on me than they can already get from the social networking sites I use and from (not-so-sneakily) spying on my Internet usage then maybe this part of the blog will help. Here’s to devaluing my personal info and taking some of the fun out of spying!

Occupy Movement and Your Rights

Lately I have been both amazed at the tenacity of the American people and disgusted at the apathy of the American people. I am, of course, referring to the Occupy movement. I am amazed, proud and impressed by the tenacity of the protesters. People who have been clubbed with batons, shot with rubber bullets/bean bags, had flash-bangs thrown amongst them, maced, punched and had tear gas grenades/canisters thrown amongst them. They continue on. An Iraq war veteran among them was just shot in the head by one of those projectiles fired from police shotguns and is in critical condition with a fractured skull and swelling of his brain. He did two tours in Iraq and survived only to be critically wounded by a domestic police force using excessive force.

On the other hand, I am also utterly disgusted at the apathy of so very many Americans toward all this. Whether or not one agrees with the ideology of the protesters, it boils down to a simple fact. The first amendment which, as you know, is supposed to protect the right to free speech and peaceable assembly is being utterly destroyed right before our eyes. I have been shocked to hear and see such complete and utter apathy regarding this.

To those of you who value your second amendment or any other amendment yet show nothing but apathy and even disdain toward the protesters’, I can only say this, Do not expect anything but apathy in return when your right to own guns or your right to freedom of religion or any other right is trampled upon as well. We are supposed to have these basic rights in America, but when we try to exercise them, the mace, tear gas, batons and other weapons come out to squash them.

It’s not about ideology. It’s about rights. So if you are one of those showing apathy and disgust toward the protesters simply because you disagree with their ideology but do not even consider their rights, don’t cry and whine and expect sympathy when your own rights are trampled upon. This is how government gets away with steadily eroding our rights. The American people complain about the incompetency of government to do anything, yet it is the American people themselves that seem utterly incapable of joining together to create change for the better because they are too busy belittling those they disagree with. If we could put our differences aside, and simply acknowledge that we need change, then we could make that change happen. I haven’t heard anyone from any side deny that we need change in this country. But as long as we are busy bickering and belittling one another then the power-hungry in government are free to go on with “business as usual”, which is eroding our rights, allowing the economy to go down the drain, destroy even further our credibility abroad and so on.

What Happened to Compassion and Sanity?

There have been some really disturbing events develop over the last few days and weeks. So disturbing, to me at least, that I just had to write about some of them and bring them out in the open in case anyone has not heard of them.

First, let’s start off with the last two GOP debates. Given that (a) Christianity is the predominate religion in America and (b) professed Christians make up the vast majority of the Republican and Tea Party base, I find it odd that at the last two debates the crowd has cheered death over executions and at least one person screamed, “YEAH!” at “let him die” over a proverbial uninsured man. I wonder if Jesus, whom these people claim to follow, would be loudly cheering executions and encouraging the uninsured to just die.

Whether one is for or against the death penalty here really seems irrelevant. It’s the applauding and cheering of these executions that is really rather disturbing. Even more disturbing, the seemingly growing consensus among a certain group that if a person is uninsured then that person should not receive healthcare, even if it means that person will clearly die. Compassion seems to be completely disappearing on the American landscape among some prominent and powerful groups and their base, or followers.

Then there is the news that the FBI had been teaching, yes actually teaching, it’s agents that mainstream Muslims are dangerous, that Muhammad was a “cult leader”, that most American Muslims are likely to be sympathizers to terrorist groups and that Muslims are more violent than Jews or Christians. (Ever heard of the Crusades? The Inquisitions?) The FBI claims it has stopped teaching this and perhaps they have, but I’m quite sure they say they have stopped simply because they were found out and embarrassed by the obvious stupidity of their actions. I am not Muslim, but it makes me want to drive around with a Koran in plain view on my dashboard to see if I’m singled out by law enforcement, especially in this backward town, for simply having a Koran.

Then there is the case of Troy Anthony Davis. Almost 20 years ago he was convicted of murder and put on death row. Since then, however, seven of the witnesses have completely recanted their testimony and some have even implicated another man at the scene as the shooter. If this does not constitute reasonable doubt, I don’t know what would! Even after cries and petitions from prominent leaders, both political and religious, Davis is still scheduled to die. After all, as Supreme Court Justice Scalia pointed out regarding the case, there is nothing unconstitutional about executing the innocent. How ridiculous is that?!

What has happened to sanity and compassion in America? If I were to take a guess, I would say it began with the unspeakably tragic events of 9/11 and the aftermath. Now we have hate speech everywhere. Anger is rampant. Paranoia is the norm. We have TSA agents doing “pat downs” on children and adults that would in any other scenario be seen as excessively invasive and even sexually assaulting. We have FBI agents being taught that if someone is Muslim, they should automatically be seen as dangerous or even a terrorist. We are still bombarded with “terror watches” and “alerts”. Fear and paranoia. Paranoia and fear. Isn’t that exactly what the terrorists wanted to invoke? Yes, it is! Unfortunately, it seems all too clear they have succeeded.

More on TCM

Featured

I’ve been saying how well TCM has worked for me, helping me overcome years of depression where Western medicine utterly failed. Now it seems that a herbal mixture used in TCM is just as effective, if not more so, than Tamiflu when it comes to treating flu. There were three control groups in the study. One group received the TCM remedy, another group received Tamiflu and the last group only Tylenol. All participants had the flu. The group that received the TCM remedy had their fevers resolve the fastest. Faster even then those that received Tamiflu.

There is a lot that gets ridiculed and dismissed as pseudo-science that, in truth, actually works and can benefit a lot of people. Unfortunately, TCM is too often one of those things that gets dismissed by Western doctors and scientists. It isn’t until they are faced with undeniable proof that they will even consider it, if even then. A shame, really. Not everything can be explained. What ultimately matters is if it works or not, regardless of whether science can explain it or not.

Note:
The study can be found online, I saw it on Reuters. I would link to it but it seems some sites do not like to be linked to. I never understood that as it only helps drive traffic to their site, but if they don’t want to be linked to, I won’t link to them.

Memories

It’s an old song, by Enigma, but it’s still one of my favorites and it pretty much sums up, in simple terms, my philosophy on life. The only part I don’t really relate to is the “destiny” thing. Other than that it’s pretty spot on. The lyrics are below. I am realizing now that every day I am making memories, right now is the best time of my life! I am surrounded by people I love and who love me back. I also realize that every day they are making memories too, and I want to help make those memories as good as possible!

Return to Innocence by Enigma:

Love
Devotion
Feeling
Emotion

Don’t be afraid to be weak
Don’t be too proud to be strong
Just look into your heart my friend
That will be the return to yourself
The return to innocence

If you want, then start to laugh
If you must, then start to cry
Be yourself, don’t hide
Just believe in destiny

Don’t care what people say
Just follow your own Way
Don’t give up and use the chance
To return to innocence

That’s not the beginning of the End
That’s the return to yourself
The return to innocence
